College life is one of the best experiences in one’s life. It offers us an opportunity to find our career path and meet some our lifetime friends. However, we cannot ignore the fact that being in college, especially in a medical school is not that simple and it leadsd to unhealthy eating. Late night study sessions, all you can eat is dining hall meals. Take away food and beer do not amount to healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, in colleges, while some aspects of our daily lives are unavoidable, there are things we can do to be able to live healthy throughout tour college life. Whether you live on or off a medical school, here are tips to help you stay fit and healthy:
1. Focus on fitness. Medical studies are challenging and a student may at times lack time to take care of his/her health. However, you need to understand that every student needs to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. You do not have to go to a gym to do this; even taking staircases instead of an elevator can be helpful. At home you can install a pool over the ground where you can be spending sometime before or after school. Swimming is considered to be one of the best workouts since it involves working out all the body parts. However, you can only swim effectively if your pool is in the right condition. If your pool is cloudy, to have a healthy swim you need to find ways to clear pool water if cloudy.
2. Cook at home If you have an option to cook on your own, you need to tae advantage. This is because when you are the chef you know exactly how much of an ingredient you put into your meals. Being able to control how much sugar, butter, oil, or salt that goes into your meals helps you become more conscious of your food choices. If you are working towards losing weight, you will be able to control how much calories you take. Moreover, cooking at home is also helpful since you will be able to carry packed food and you will not need to go for fast foods.
3. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables You need to fill up with fruits and vegetables to curb day cravings. Being in a medical school, you may not have time for these two food groups but you need to know they are very crucial to your health. You need to get at last 2 cups of fruits and about 3 cups of vegetables.
4. Go to sleep Late night studying makes it hard for majority of students to get proper sleep. You need to organize your time to ensure you get enough sleep. Sleeping will not only make you happier but it is also healthy. Lack of sleep may cause diabetes and obesity as well, not to mention that waking up groggy puts a damper on every daily activity.
5. Cut back on soda and drink more water When growing up, we have al been told by our parents and teachers to avoid soda since it causes obesity and diabetes. While occasional soft-drink is not life threatening, drinking on a daily basis multiplies itself each passing day and can affect your health. To avoid this, get into the habit of carrying a bottle of water around. By drinking more water, you will reduce cravings, keep your body hydrated, and stay fit and healthy.
